SLICER ERROR → LOCAL FIX

Cura & Bambu Studio: Non-Manifold Edges — Check & Autofix

Your slicer flagged non-manifold or open edges. Check the STL and preview an auto-repair in the browser — nothing uploaded.

How the error shows up in Cura vs Bambu Studio

In Ultimaker Cura, a broken mesh often surfaces while you prepare the plate: the model may look hollow in the preview, walls may disappear after slicing, or a warning mentions non-manifold geometry. You can still slice many mildly broken files because Cura tries a silent repair — and that guess is exactly when vents get sealed or gaps fuse the wrong way.

Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer tend to be more explicit. The mesh-error or object panel lists non-manifold edges and open edges with counts. A red badge before you hit Slice is a signal to inspect the file, not to keep clicking Print. The wording differs across forks, but the underlying complaint is the same: the triangle soup does not describe a clean volume.

If you pulled the model from Printables, MakerWorld, or a marketplace ZIP, export noise and boolean leftovers are common. Checking the file in a browser before another hour of slicer settings saves that loop — and you can quote the edge counts when you file a model report.

What “non-manifold” means in slicer language

A printable solid, for a slicer, is a closed shell: every edge is shared by exactly two triangles. That rule is how the tool decides where plastic goes. A hole leaves an edge with only one triangle (a boundary). A non-manifold edge has three or more triangles meeting — an internal wall, a T-junction, or two shells glued along a seam the CAD boolean never cleaned.

You do not need the topology paper. In practice: boundary edges ≈ missing surface or an intentional opening; non-manifold edges ≈ overlapping patches the slicer cannot classify as inside or outside. Self-intersections that cut through faces without sharing an edge are a separate class of problem; this site's checker counts edges after welding nearby vertices, not every possible intersection.

What this site's Autofix does — and does not

On the STL repair page you drop a local .stl. The report shows watertightness, boundary edges, non-manifold edges, and degenerate triangles. Basic clean-up welds near-duplicate vertices and drops zero-area triangles; it never fills holes. Autofix goes further: it triangulates the rim of each closed hole, flips inverted shells, and paints the new triangles pink so you can orbit them before you download.

Autofix does not promise to clear every non-manifold edge. Extra triangles on a shared edge need a modeling decision — delete one lobe, remesh, or rebuild the boolean in CAD. Large or tangled openings may stay open and show up in the report. Preview is free. Downloading the auto-repaired file is free once per browser (1 download), then Pro at $9.99/month or $79/year. Nothing is uploaded either way.

When you still need to remesh in CAD

Keep the STEP or native CAD file when the mesh is a dead export. If whole faces are missing, if pink patches closed a drain or screw channel you meant to keep open, or if non-manifold counts barely move after autofix, go back to the solid model. Remesh or re-export with a tighter tolerance, then re-check. Blender's 3D Print Toolbox, Meshmixer Inspector, and Windows 3D Builder can help for one-off mesh edits — use them when you have looked at the opening and you want that specific change, not as a blind reflex on intentional holes.

Short checklist before you slice

  • Drop the STL on STL repair and read boundary + non-manifold counts.
  • Run Autofix, inspect pink fills, then download only if the preview looks right.
  • Confirm units and bounding-box size in the viewer — STL has no unit; slicers assume millimeters. See what an STL file is.
  • If the source was a slicer project, unpack with 3MF to STL first, then repair the plain mesh.

FAQ

What does “non-manifold edges” mean in Cura or Bambu Studio?+

It means at least one edge is shared by three or more triangles, so the slicer cannot tell inside from outside. Cura may warn during prepare; Bambu Studio / Orca often flags it in the mesh-error panel. Open edges (holes) are a related but separate count.

Can this site fix every non-manifold mesh?+

No. Autofix fills closed hole rims and fixes shell orientation. It counts non-manifold edges but does not delete or split the extra triangles — that choice belongs in CAD. Expect a free preview and an honest report, not a 100% cure.

Is the repaired download free?+

Checking and previewing autofix are free. Downloading an auto-repaired STL is free for the first 1 download per browser; after that you need Pro ($9.99/month or $79/year).

Do I upload my STL to your server?+

No. The checker and autofix run in this browser tab with JavaScript. There is no upload endpoint. After the page loads you can go offline and the tool still works.

When should I remesh in CAD instead of autofix?+

When whole faces are missing, when intentional openings get capped, or when non-manifold counts stay high after autofix. Keep the STEP or native CAD file as source of truth and re-export a clean mesh.
